I dunno about you, but I think this just makes Knuckles a really great character. Knuckles’ argument subtly addresses how social issues can affect everybody, not just women. This just brings me back to my mentioning of third-wave feminism–largely concerned about how women are affected by social issues. How is that feminism and female empowerment?Īlso, Knuckles is calling Amy out on a contradicting viewpoint, but because he’s a guy, his argument is automatically invalid? At least, that’s the impression I’m getting from the word choice of “mansplain” here. That sounds like an admittance that she is actually inferior, therefore she must prove she isn’t. Even if Amy is doing it unconsciously, she’s still saying that–as a woman–she needs to do something to prove that she is not inferior to men. of differing socio-economic and racial backgrounds.ĮDIT: I’ve been seeing some people say that Knuckles is “mansplaining.” I don’t think he’s mansplaining. If she were actually a true feminist, then she wouldn’t feel the need to point it out and would just play the game.īasically, Amy is a third-wave feminist–one who is largely more concerned about women’s sides of issues (that affect all genders) and how women can prove that they are not inferior (which is rather contradictory, if you think about it)–while Knuckles is more fourth-wave–more focused on being an individual as opposed to rejecting certain parts of you in order to fit a mold that society or certain subcultures have of certain groups of people and more concerned about how social issues can affect men, women, non-binary people, the LGBTQ+ community, etc. Knuckles is calling Amy out for drawing attention to herself and making herself seem like the sole exception, thus implying that her sex is what causes her to be inferior at the sport. In this case, Amy is saying that because she’s a woman, she’s going to score the penalty kick to prove that she can play just as well as the guys. In other words, by constantly pointing out that women can do what men can do, it subtly or unconsciously says that because women are the “inferior sex,” they must do something to always prove that they can be just as good or better than men. Knuckles responds with, “Anytime someone calls attention to the breaking of gender roles, it ultimately undermines the concept of gender equality by implying that this is an exception and not the status quo.” For those who are confused or think that Knuckles is actually being an anti-feminist, let me break it down.Īmy said, “Can a young woman break the glass ceiling and prove once and for all that a female can be just as good as an athlete as a male?”
